Apricot trees bloomed in the backyard today…
Taos opened with cheers — and the snow is melting fast enough to be fun ;). Plenty more images on the way, but for now here is a video of some spring slush from above the board.

My school program is at its peak for the planned year, tapering after two more weeks. 18 hours a week in a commercial kitchen + spanish, business, and safety. The kitchen time is hands on and invaluable as a broad industry overview, but I find myself enjoying the business coursework more than anticipated. I look forward to applying these skills in the wild oh so soon. Here’s the most successful recipe yet, simply delicious.
Easy Focaccia w/ Olives
1 1/2 cups bread flour
1 1/2 cups AP flour
2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp. white sugar
1 (0.25 oz) package instant yeast
1 1/3 cups warm water (110 F)
3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp. rosemary
1/2 cup kalamata olives, chopped
2 Tbsp. grated parmesan cheese
Mix flours and salt and make a well in center. Sprinkle sugar and yeast into well. Carefully pour warm water into well and let stand until yeast begins to act. Add 2 Tbsp of oil into well and stir, beginining in center and gradually widening.
Turn out on floured surface and knead until just smooth, keep soft. Pour 1/2 tsp. of oil into clean bowl and add dough, turning once to coat with oil. Cover and let rise until doubled.
Punch down and gently fold in most olives. Press or roll dough out to 1/2 inch thickness onto parchment covered baking sheet. Cover with remaining oil and sprinkle with olives, rosemary, cheese. Proof in unheated oven above pan of hot water until doubled, 20 to 25 minutes.
Bake at 375 for 20 to 25 minutes or until browned on top.

And for the geeks // Answering last month’s, how to publishing recipes? Using a recipe microformat of course! Still under development, but also includes a list of existing formats for consideration.
Quite busy with school, how to publish recipes?
While seeking notes on the word “chingón“, I found an article linking El Paso and Los Angeles via Alburque to the Zoot Suits of the 40s through street ( pachuco ) slang etymology. Los Pachucos y Su Lenguaje by Richard Griego. I’ve never taken a good look at El Paso‘s influence on hispanic and west coast culture through the past century, but this article presents a number of perfect starting points.
All in Berlin — tomorrow begins 24th Chaos Communication Congress (24C3), hacker conference european extraordinare which appears to continue its growth.
Meanwhile locally, we continue to enjoy a bumper crop of organic, high-desert, powder. The backcountry is filling in, and Taos opens to snowboards march 19th. See you there ;p !!!!!!
The film festival was a huge success, thanks to all who contributed. Favorite far and away When Broomsticks Were King chronicling brooklyn stickball of days past.
First day this year spent sliding around at wolf creek this past Tuesday upon their 1st 50+ inch storm of the year. That hill never ceases to amaze with such wonderful terrain to roam about the powder.

I’m impressed with the two containers heading to burning man from brooklyn, loading tomorrow morning at nyccontainer, and at only ~$5 / square foot. (Good luck Kelley). Just yesterday came a request from bigrigjig for three full flatbeds from Oakland — with the express purpose of erecting two more.
The BLM has approved burning man through 2010, but the BLM Environmental Assessment ( pdf ) is worth a glance for the curious…
…and for all those planning a visit, don’t forget your transistor radio!
I’ll be watching from afar yet again, but do have sights on the area around Estación Creel near the Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon) in Chihuaua, Mexico. Do send info and come along after the burn :)!

I’m quite excited to see the new Dance Parade planned this Saturday the 19th of May in NYC. It reminds of the Karneval der Kulturen of Berlin (upcoming May 25-28). While attending the 2006 Karneval, I had one of those, “this never happens in the states”, moments. Of course, both Berlin and NYC are exceptions within their nations, and it’s refreshing to see events with such potential kicking off for a first run this side of the border.
From their site: “We are celebrating everything from Break dance to Ballet with Burning Man Spirit and Love Parade Energy.” Well, Love Parade 2006 sounded and acted like the zombie it now is, but with alternatives like this — good riddance! This style of parade allows a few nice beat floats including a variety of styles (goa, dnb, trance, hip hop), something at which last years Love Parade failed miserably, while also blasting some Salsa, Irish, and Asian tunes to enjoy along the way!
As I’ve said about similar events in the past, the ultimate success of this event will be determined by the accessibility of public participation. One key to Karneval in berlin is allowing everyone into the parade street to dance along. Oh, and sufficient volume never hurts ;). Kelley, I expect a personal review! ;) Looking forward to seeing the picutres!

I’m sure by now all of you are using an aggregator to collect your favorite blogs, photo streams, podcasts, and other updated material into one location for easy consumption — haha, just kidding, I know most of you aren’t(!). For a reminder, check out my public aggregator at herebox.org/in, which collects a slightly outdated set of feeds right here on herebox. Notice the long list of sources down the side contributing to the content.
I’ve been happily using rojo.com for years, but a gap in service from last Sunday through Tuesday prompted an overdue survey of current options. Industry leader bloglines lacks a native river-of-news view, still eliminating them from consideration immediately. Google Reader and Rojo offer both tags to organize various feeds and a river-of-news view. Google’s product imported my OPML from rojo correctly and is much cleaner and functional since my previous visit mid-last year. Rojo remains better looking than Google’s, though perhaps only due to my familiarity, however Rojo’s own AJAX based redesign mid-last year hurt its performance significantly. It is a huge resource hog when loading, occasionally causing my entire browser to become unresponsive for a few moments. Further, it periodically jumps back to the top of the page while loading. These complaints aside, I continue to prefer Rojo’s overall interaction design and organization. Google needs to improve their tag / label interface across all of their services in Gmail. Their current drop-down list is horribly slow and awkward when adding or removing tags / labels and should be complimented with a keyboard-shortcut to add-a-tag predictive-text-box, as well as showing current tags when viewing an item with 1-click removal ability (see flickr, rojo, delicious). [ed-May-23:: Google reader has a fantastic keyboard-shortcut to tag-input function. Now let's see that in Gmail!]
In summary, Google’s Reader service is catching up quickly to my remaining favorite Rojo, which is ailing from long-term performance and development issues. Apologies for limiting to the big 3; please suggest any river-of-news browser-based aggregators you would also recommend.
[ed-May18:: wow, yahoo pipes, just wow. to be reviewed. ]

Linden’s official announcement on friday, The advent of … sculpted prims, is exciting. Until now, all 3D content was constructed by combining and scaling multiple fundamental geometric shapes (spheres, tori, cubes, etc.). These new sculpted primitives may be imported and exported directly between the vitual world and 3D design applications such as expensive Maya, google’s Sketchup, or the open source blender which will facilitate a huge leap in content complexity. This opens the door to a practically limitless body of existing 3D content. It will also bring a new wave of seasoned 3D enthusiasts into the fray, changing the healthy SL content creation market dramatically. See also: Second Life Wiki: Sculpted Prims.
In world go club meetings are Monday (noon – 2pm SLT) and Thursday (8pm to 10pm SLT), at the go center of second life, see pictures.
Following early German language efforts in 2004, the english wikipedia has released their first official static collection of articles. Weighing in under 2,000 articles, the collection represents around 0.1% of wikipedia’s current size at over 1,700,000 english articles. The initial release, version 0.5, is the first of two planned test releases to be released during 2007 in preparation for a polished and balanced version 1.0. I find these efforts within the wikipedia community extremely exciting and hope that these free and public releases will allow access to otherwise unreachable audiences.
These releases will be scrutinized for accuracy and will hopefully demonstrate a new phase of maturity for the project. One can even hope for a renewed interest in ongoing participation within the general public.
Find further details by browsing the contents of version 0.5 , buy or download a free copy at wikipediaondvd.com , and participate in the efforts toward the 1.0 release on the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team page. Torrent downloads available via torrentz.com, compressed as kiwix-0.5.iso.bz2 or uncompressed as kiwix-0.5.iso.
As always, please don’t hesitate to request my assistance with anything wikipedia related via email or my user page at user:here.

With just under two weeks remaining for local lift-served snow, I can easily review the passing winter with ear wide smiles. An early powder day at north Idaho’s Schweitzer was an ideal first day shared with dad. Around 40 working days teaching at ski santa fe saw busy holidays and excellent conditions through empty February. I passed my AASI level 1 certification, directed by Bryan Olson, during a nice 3-day visit to Angelfire resort. Back when I did my PSIA level 1 certification on skis in 1996, the AASI did not even yet exist! I look forward to remaining professionally involved in winter sliding activities for years to come. Finally, Ginger and Molly correctly refused to let Wolf Creek pass another season unseen. As the pictures show, we lucked out Sunday enjoying our introduction to Wolf Creek with a foot of excellent spring powder and a 96″ base.
In Equipement, Burton’s stiff Driver X boots are saving my ankles. I squeezed one run in on a demo Neversummer SL 158″, one of my most enjoyable all year. Locally, Greg continues to hand-carve a few excellent custom boards a year at MINA Boards (get well soon!). Venture snowboards’ demos also impressed. Their 158″ Zephyr provided a solid all-mountain ride, and their 162″ Euphoria blew me away on Wolf Creek’s powder draped back side. I’d never had so much fun with so little effort in foot deep snow — highly recommended for those able to go for a powder specific board.
The Venture folks also turned me on to the incredible Silverton mountain, near where they are moving their operations. Guided only from Jan-Mar with one double lift up to the ridge. Who’s up for a visit next year?!! (Thanks Klem and Lisa!)
Thanks also to all the folks who visited Ski Santa Fe — see you again next year.
