Baking up Business

on Thursday, February 28th, 2008 ... ob: academic + business + food + geek

Pay AttentionMy school program is at its peak for the planned year, tapering after two more weeks. 18 hours a week in a commercial kitchen + spanish, business, and safety. The kitchen time is hands on and invaluable as a broad industry overview, but I find myself enjoying the business coursework more than anticipated. I look forward to applying these skills in the wild oh so soon. Here’s the most successful recipe yet, simply delicious.

Easy Focaccia w/ Olives

1 1/2 cups bread flour
1 1/2 cups AP flour
2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp. white sugar
1 (0.25 oz) package instant yeast
1 1/3 cups warm water (110 F)
3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp. rosemary
1/2 cup kalamata olives, chopped
2 Tbsp. grated parmesan cheese

Mix flours and salt and make a well in center. Sprinkle sugar and yeast into well. Carefully pour warm water into well and let stand until yeast begins to act. Add 2 Tbsp of oil into well and stir, beginining in center and gradually widening.

Turn out on floured surface and knead until just smooth, keep soft. Pour 1/2 tsp. of oil into clean bowl and add dough, turning once to coat with oil. Cover and let rise until doubled.

Punch down and gently fold in most olives. Press or roll dough out to 1/2 inch thickness onto parchment covered baking sheet. Cover with remaining oil and sprinkle with olives, rosemary, cheese. Proof in unheated oven above pan of hot water until doubled, 20 to 25 minutes.

Bake at 375 for 20 to 25 minutes or until browned on top.

And for the geeks // Answering last month’s, how to publishing recipes? Using a recipe microformat of course! Still under development, but also includes a list of existing formats for consideration.

la cocina chingón

on Thursday, January 31st, 2008 ... ob: academic + geek

Quite busy with school, how to publish recipes?

While seeking notes on the word “chingón“, I found an article linking El Paso and Los Angeles via Alburque to the Zoot Suits of the 40s through street ( pachuco ) slang etymology. Los Pachucos y Su Lenguaje by Richard Griego. I’ve never taken a good look at El Paso‘s influence on hispanic and west coast culture through the past century, but this article presents a number of perfect starting points.

English Wikipedia static version 0.5

on Wednesday, April 11th, 2007 ... ob: academic

Following early German language efforts in 2004, the english wikipedia has released their first official static collection of articles. Weighing in under 2,000 articles, the collection represents around 0.1% of wikipedia’s current size at over 1,700,000 english articles. The initial release, version 0.5, is the first of two planned test releases to be released during 2007 in preparation for a polished and balanced version 1.0. I find these efforts within the wikipedia community extremely exciting and hope that these free and public releases will allow access to otherwise unreachable audiences.

These releases will be scrutinized for accuracy and will hopefully demonstrate a new phase of maturity for the project. One can even hope for a renewed interest in ongoing participation within the general public.

Find further details by browsing the contents of version 0.5 , buy or download a free copy at wikipediaondvd.com , and participate in the efforts toward the 1.0 release on the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team page. Torrent downloads available via torrentz.com, compressed as kiwix-0.5.iso.bz2 or uncompressed as kiwix-0.5.iso.

As always, please don’t hesitate to request my assistance with anything wikipedia related via email or my user page at user:here.

Cantenna and Magnetic Snowboard Bindings!

on Tuesday, January 25th, 2005 ... ob: academic + games + geek + one liners + travel

one liners:

  • cantenna – “How To Build A Tin Can Waveguide WiFi Antenna” for 802.11b/g or 2.4Ghz apps. Personal testimonials from the Nevada desert claim great success. (–where you at Matt?!)
  • Graf Snowboards, resources for /building/ snowboards ;). Possible magnetic bindings, already tried on a skateboard, follow discussion at graf… (graf via greg at rezriders.org)
  • css discuss wiki – 800+ messages in 10 days, and a decent wiki to accompany.
  • Mirek’s Java Cellebration (MJCell) is a Java applet that allows playing 300+ Cellular Automata rules and 1400+ patterns. Ohhh… the patterns, man, the patterns.
  • giantmicrobes – “We make stuffed animals that look like tiny microbes” , nothing to say.
  • The Supreme Court – because it inspires, and because I forget. bios (pdf) of current justices.
  • Vendee Globe 2004 is nearing completion. “A sailing race around the world, for singlehanders, without any stopover.” Intense.

Digital::Nimbus – Richard Devine & * sxsw *

on Wednesday, January 19th, 2005 ... ob: academic + gatherings + geek + media + music

Upcoming this friday the 21st, Richard Devine, live on D::N – Digital::Nimbus, streaming from kuci Irvine, CA. I miss the show nights out here, streams save the day. (via hush)

So, who’s in for sxsw, March 11-15? I’ve all but registered for the interactive conference, check the speakers. Need a place to sleep in Austin. I’d /love/ to stay for the music, but it’ll be one of the busiest weeks for instructing, so I’ll be needed on the snow.

It must be a good thing when I can include so many categories.

Go , Oregon Trail

on Thursday, November 18th, 2004 ... ob: academic + games + procrastination

I’ve been playing a daily game or two of Go recently, mostly against gnugo v3.4. I am slowly improving and almost able to reliably win on a 9×9 board at the easist difficulty ;). Just in time, version 3.6 was released today, supposedly slightly stronger, and should set me back another week or so. I have been feeding played games back through gnugo using the –replay option prompting the engine to consider each position played and notate what it finds as the best move. Anyone interested in a game, drop a line and we can meet on igs or similar.

Google gets another cheer from my corner with google scholar. It can still be difficult to pull full text documents out of the journal empire, but it looks like it works excellently at pulling academic results for such topics as teleportation, labanotation, and gravity waves. Re-msn… keep working, I’ll check back around version 3.

In the probably-not-worth-the-time dept: I’d like to add a friend of a friend (FOAF) doc here. A nice potential alternative to social networking sites, FOAF as with blogs will see realtively limited implementation. Though perhaps it will lead to a protocol worth implementing through a more traditional social networking site structure (orkut xml, yum). Plus, #irpg on EFnet (and many clones) is possibly even more clever than progress quest, and at least as pointless.

Final thought: Ryan called me up the other day pointed out that the classic video game oregon trail was initially programmed at carleton college way back in 1971. yeehaw carl. Thanks ryan.

Seattle Go Center & Bucky Ball Origami…

on Wednesday, May 7th, 2003 ... ob: academic + games + geek

Happy to have run across the story behind the giant game of go on the side of a building in the university district along 45th facing I-5 from the East. I’ve known the wall partially contains the seattle go center for some time. Turns out the board position is from a championship game played by Kaoru Iwamoto, the center’s founder, outside Hiroshima on August 6, 1945… as the bomb fell! The game was later completed, and the go centers founded as an effort promoting peace. I’m planning to stop by next Tuesday evening for beginner’s night.

In a similar direction, I’ve successfully completed my first origami buckyball. I finally slowed down enough to follow Andys directions and mimic one similar to that currently shown on herecam. As such, I’ve developed a mild obsession with modular origami and the geometric spaces the structures can represent. Further considering long and debated history of the activity, its keeping all halves of the brain quite happY)
