on Saturday, December 30th, 2000 ... ob: pre 2005

back in minnesota.. it was great to see everyone in idaho, take care over there. ;)

i’m spending most of my time setting things up to return to school and consequently haven’t been spending as much time online. we’ll see how much i end up using the web this term.. i’m not sure yet. in the mean time, i setup a primitive portal which i’ll be updating as i learn what works best.

my vote on what 2001 should be called? .. 2k1, or maybe 2-oh-1. i’ll be somewhere between minneapolis and chicago for the big night, plans are still in the works.. madison looks likely. drop bass is throwing ‘the second coming‘ as their annual new years event. perhaps i’ll see you there…

on Thursday, December 21st, 2000 ... ob: pre 2005

the folks at warp records sent out their year end summary detailing what they’ve been up to. i particularly like their hopes for the future: “…onto 2001 which has got to be a great year – its our time! Boy bands and depressing guitar combos with prehistoric sounding music will be banished from the air waves and the music people will be space travelling with will be……..”.

now now.. can’t go condoning censorship.. . . maybe just this once.. ;).

i just watched solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky..

i’m speechless.

still haven’t found stalker (see ambient.. stalker..) but i’m now even more motivated to find it. if anyone has seen any of his films, or watches one (highly recommended).. let me know. i’d really like to discuss it a bit..

on Monday, December 18th, 2000 ... ob: pre 2005

last summer we drove out near toronto to attend wemf 2000 and had an *amazing* time.. (thanks to everyone who was there for making it a great festival ;). on the way back, sara and i drove the marathon stretch through sunday night back to minnesota during which we passed through chicago. lucky for us, it was the perfect time to pick up ‘word jazz‘ on wbez chicago. at the time i had no idea what the program was, and we were out of range before i could get even a station id. I remember it being perfect for the evening though.. ‘show me… the smile catalog’ went one of the lines. it is one of my best memories from the trip.

it’s possible that i’m more inclined to enjoy such a show since my other radio favorites include selected shorts and similar such spoken word shows.. but i’m fairly certain that most people would enjoy nordine’s show a great deal. this guy has worked with the dead, tom waits, william burroughs, dj food (listen), moloko, countless more.. he’s done some e.a.poe readings which i’d love to find, not the horror.. he says about poe: “he did one on noseology that was very funny.” ;) or ‘crossing the paragraph’ so..

if you don’t know who ken nordine is.. read up.

and then discuss ;)..

(and if you want to get me a cool xmas gift… hinthint)

stopped by hastings last night…

on Monday, December 18th, 2000 ... ob: pre 2005

stopped by hastings last night looking for stalker (which they told me they had) only to find that it has vanished without a trace.. after stopping by three other video stores and jack in the box i decided i just wasn’t going to find it. fortunately, i picked up a number of used cd’s at hastings while i was there.. so the evening was not yet lost ;).

jamiroquai – cosmic girl. this song rocks.. one of the most disco-y songs i’ll tolerate and i even like it. the mixes aren’t bad either.
art of noise – the seduction of claude debussey. not sure yet, but i think i’ll keep it. some of it is highly questionable… but other sections i think i’ll end up liking.
art of noise – the ambient collection. i remember i bought an art of noise cd for $1 a while back and hated it.. surprisingly both of these i think are alright. i’m a sucker for ambient collections.. should be great on the radio.
pitchshifter – deviant. another ‘not sure’. i haven’t really listened to music of this sort for so long i don’t know what to do with it. gut reaction, unfortunately, is that it is a bit bland.. we’ll see.
the sound of music by pizzicato five. why don’t pop stations play more music like this?.. definitely a keeper. happy happy happy. it is a sad state of affairs that a number of these cds were placed brand new in the used section and sold slowly for $4…

and finally.. ken nordine.. well, i’ll get to that in a moment.

i just recieved stalker by robert rich and b. lustmord in the mail. this one is *really* spooky at times.. but also has some nice tranquil moments (real audio). apparently it was inspired by a film of the same name by Andrei Tarkovsky which i’m going to have to try and find… The album was rated #1 in 1999 by the hyperreal ambient mailing list

I think i’ll teach my kids to reply ‘combustion engineer’ if anyone ever calls them a pyro.. yahoo even has a whole category!

I’m hardly surprised this program is full. They even their own journal .. of course.. all the content is subscription based. they know we’ll shell out the cash to see the cool pictures people who’ve dedicated their *life* to fire have taken. “… I read it for the articles.. really!”. just think.. all those hours spent staring into the flame of a lighter could have been put to use producing advanced research videos like this!

where was all this when I was 10?.. .. back in my day we made our fires by *hand*, in *sub freezing temperatures*, in *august*! .. and those were the lucky days.. ya hear me!.. come back here!..

on Tuesday, December 12th, 2000 ... ob: pre 2005

I watched a well done pbs special on tesla tonight. I knew generally of his more famous (and breathtaking) work with tesla coils, but had forgotten how important his ideas were in turn of the century science. 113 patents including basic patent for radio in 1895. He further proposed later in life designs for the ‘death ray’ as a means to end war and a method of transmitting electricity worldwide through the upper atmosphere, a project still under research today in alaska (see it live).

when the first plant is inaugurated and it is shown that a telegraphic message, almost as secret and non-interferable as a thought, can be transmitted to any terrestrial distance, the sound of the human voice, with all its intonations and inflections, faithfully and instantly reproduced at any other point of the globe, the energy of a waterfall made available for supplying light, heat or motive power, anywhere-on sea, or land, or high in the air-humanity will be like an ant heap stirred up with a stick: See the excitement coming!.”

his papers now reside in his native country at the belgrade tesla museum.

on Monday, December 11th, 2000 ... ob: pre 2005

one cool thing about this whole weblog deal is that it forces me to constantly think of things in relation to how I would present them on the web. I used to keep bookmarks/ideas/etc in a college messaging system accessible only by my friends, but I usually didn’t pay all the much attention to formatting. In fact, it was usually a total mess.. just a place for me to ‘queue’ urls to be seen or sorted later. I’ve been tempted to use this as a queue as well, but something about the public nature of the page prevents me from doing it.. I’ve always got to format it. I think part of the problem is that I used to read memepool everyday where the best posts have a different link for almost every letter ;).

problem is, it prevents anything from getting posted. I guess even though I claim i’ve been doing this for ages now just at different locations, i’m still very much learning what I want to do with it…

result: daily journals of some form are good, irregardless of what is written.. it forces me to write everyday which either leads to.. ‘wow, today was a good day’ or something like ‘i didn’t do a damn thing today’. hopefully though, even the ‘i didn’t do anything days’ can be redeemed by finding something to write about…

i was searching for info on the old Coeur d’alene Marimba band which used to play around here, and it turns out they’re still around! They are now called ‘Coeurimba’ and even released a cd. I also found a guy with a bootleg from the moscow renaissance festival. cool, i wonder if it is as good as i remember..
