april circuit twitter skateboard

at 23:53 ... ob: geek

April whizzed by bringing the end of both snow and school for some months. Spanish study continues…

In Minneapolis right now(!), bent festival circuit bending geekery.

Also a severely delayed nod toward twitter, where I finally signed on and encourage participation. If you haven’t seen/read the hype, it is a novel distribution network based on sharing short thoughts and happenings as text messages among a social network. Dodgeball is a similar service oriented more toward real-time proximity and location based messaging, but relatively useless outside major metros. I wonder at the apparent lack of regional features on twitter, and encourage location based addressing and subscription be further developed.

A few comments on the last video post results in a similar dirt shot, though my skills clearly favor the snow…

Apricot trees bloomed in the backyard today…

Taos opened with cheers — and the snow is melting fast enough to be fun ;). Plenty more images on the way, but for now here is a video of some spring slush from above the board.

Baking up Business

at 22:28 ... ob: academic + business + food + geek

Pay AttentionMy school program is at its peak for the planned year, tapering after two more weeks. 18 hours a week in a commercial kitchen + spanish, business, and safety. The kitchen time is hands on and invaluable as a broad industry overview, but I find myself enjoying the business coursework more than anticipated. I look forward to applying these skills in the wild oh so soon. Here’s the most successful recipe yet, simply delicious.

Easy Focaccia w/ Olives

1 1/2 cups bread flour
1 1/2 cups AP flour
2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp. white sugar
1 (0.25 oz) package instant yeast
1 1/3 cups warm water (110 F)
3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp. rosemary
1/2 cup kalamata olives, chopped
2 Tbsp. grated parmesan cheese

Mix flours and salt and make a well in center. Sprinkle sugar and yeast into well. Carefully pour warm water into well and let stand until yeast begins to act. Add 2 Tbsp of oil into well and stir, beginining in center and gradually widening.

Turn out on floured surface and knead until just smooth, keep soft. Pour 1/2 tsp. of oil into clean bowl and add dough, turning once to coat with oil. Cover and let rise until doubled.

Punch down and gently fold in most olives. Press or roll dough out to 1/2 inch thickness onto parchment covered baking sheet. Cover with remaining oil and sprinkle with olives, rosemary, cheese. Proof in unheated oven above pan of hot water until doubled, 20 to 25 minutes.

Bake at 375 for 20 to 25 minutes or until browned on top.

Adapted from Jack Dickson’s recipe at allrecipes.com

And for the geeks // Answering last month’s, how to publishing recipes? Using a recipe microformat of course! Still under development, but also includes a list of existing formats for consideration.

la cocina chingón

at 21:23 ... ob: academic + geek

Quite busy with school, how to publish recipes?

While seeking notes on the word “chingón“, I found an article linking El Paso and Los Angeles via Alburque to the Zoot Suits of the 40s through street ( pachuco ) slang etymology. Los Pachucos y Su Lenguaje by Richard Griego. I’ve never taken a good look at El Paso’s influence on hispanic and west coast culture through the past century, but this article presents a number of perfect starting points.

The film festival was a huge success, thanks to all who contributed. Favorite far and away When Broomsticks Were King chronicling brooklyn stickball of days past.

First day this year spent sliding around at wolf creek this past Tuesday upon their 1st 50+ inch storm of the year. That hill never ceases to amaze with such wonderful terrain to roam about the powder.

Square feet from Brooklyn to Barranca del Cobre

at 22:54 ... ob: gatherings + travel

I’m impressed with the two containers heading to burning man from brooklyn, loading tomorrow morning at nyccontainer, and at only ~$5 / square foot. (Good luck Kelley). Just yesterday came a request from bigrigjig for three full flatbeds from Oakland — with the express purpose of erecting two more.

The BLM has approved burning man through 2010, but the BLM Environmental Assessment ( pdf ) is worth a glance for the curious…

…and for all those planning a visit, don’t forget your transistor radio!

I’ll be watching from afar yet again, but do have sights on the area around Estación Creel near the Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon) in Chihuaua, Mexico. Do send info and come along after the burn :)!
